Counsel to young people about spouse selection

Trigger warning This post contains some truths that are likely to offend people who have adopted false ideas into their core world views. Of course, unless this is your first time on my blog, that shouldn't surprise you.

While it is risky for me to say these things, knowing how people who love a lie will say and do all sorts of evil when confronted with truth, I believe the joy that will come to those who take a higher path as a result of these words is worth it. You can rage against the truth all you want, but that won't relieve you of the pain that inevitably results from living incomplete or incorrect principles.

Note: Everything said here is broad brush generalization. While there are exceptions to every rule, I advise you to take extreme caution.
Marriage is a transaction In order to marry, each potential spouse has to believe that it is in their best interest. After all, the risk of a bad choice is high. Men marry women for certain reasons, and women marry men for certa…

Understanding the science of 3 Nephi 8

1 And now it came to pass that according to our record, and we know our record to be true, for behold, it was a just man who did keep the record—for he truly did many miracles in the name of Jesus; and there was not any man who could do a miracle in the name of Jesus save he were cleansed every whit from his iniquity—
2 And now it came to pass, if there was no mistake made by this man in the reckoning of our time, the thirty and third year had passed away;
3 And the people began to look with great earnestness for the sign which had been given by the prophet Samuel, the Lamanite, yea, for the time that there should be darkness for the space of three days over the face of the land.
4 And there began to be great doubtings and disputations among the people, notwithstanding so many signs had been given.
These things had been amply prophesied to come. The prophets had described them in great detail, and the people had 34 years to prepare.

5 And it came to pass in the thirty and fourth year, i…

Some thoughts

I used to think that everyone was pretty much the same. Now, I realize that the heart and intellect of man appears in all shapes and sizes.
I used to think that I was glad that I did not have to relive my past, because I didn't want to go through those hard times again. Then I wished I could go back to do things differently. Then I wished I could go back and do it again knowing what I know now, because I believed I could help people more than I did. Now I realize that the interactions I had were planned by an all-knowing God so that it the ideal time for those interactions to happen for the greatest good.

I used to think that everyone thought and felt like me. I don't think that anymore. Not a day goes by that I am not given some stark example of some base motivation in someone else that was hidden by my naive optimism, and yet it has taken all of my 35 years (ok, maybe 18 years where I've been paying attention) to finally believe that mankind is as fallen as the scriptu…

Hang in there

I know that many of you are suffering.

Some of you are hungering and thirsting after righteousness, but are at a loss as to how you can obtain more light and truth.

Some of you are overcome by the Lord's peeling back the corners on the darkness in this world.

Some of you are overwhelmed by trials that assault you on all sides.

To all of you, the Lord's message is to rejoice, because the time of your deliverance is approaching.

His words are the key to unlocking these and all other chains of captivity.

When he began his ministry, the Lord stood and said:

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. (Luke 4:18-19)
His mission today is the same as it has always been, and his hand has not rested.
The Lord works in many ways a…
