"to take away our reproach"

And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach. (Isaiah 4:1)

What is their reproach?

16 Moreover the Lord saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:
17 Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the Lord will discover their secret parts.
18 In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon,
19 The chains, and the bracelets, and the mufflers,
20 The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings,
21 The rings, and nose jewels,
22 The changeable suits of apparel, and the mantles, and the wimples, and the crisping pins,
23 The glasses, and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the veils.
24 And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair baldness; and instead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty.
25 Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.
26 And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she being desolate shall sit upon the ground. (Isaiah 3)

Modern women and men foolishly define the the value of women through their looks, and include in the equation what makeup, clothing, plumbing, etc. contribute. When the Lord corrects the haughtiness (overinflated view based on illusion) of women by removing makeup, clothing, bathing, hair, etc., women and men will be forced to calculate the value of women based on their character and their contribution.

In that day, their character will be evident because in hardship our true selves are revealed. In that day, their contribution will be evident because in a primitive environment no one holds the illusion that men and women are interchangeable.

The generations that come after that one will be raised with a correct understanding of the value of women: They will understand that while their good looks are valuable assets in the attempt to attract a quality husband, they are fleeting and short-lived. They will understand that their long-term value is a function of the following attributes of character that, unlike their looks, they are not born with, and need to actually work to develop, namely the ability to:

  • Beautify (improve the appearance of)
  • Enliven (make more entertaining, interesting, appealing)
  • Enhance (improve, make more valuable)
  • Excite (cause feelings of enthusiasm and eagerness)
  • Enrich (improve or enhance the value of)
  • Uplift (improve the spiritual, social, or intellectual condition of)
  • Gladden (make glad)
  • Mollify (calm and soothe)
  • Pacify (bring peace to)

Women will also remember (as our society has forgotten) that children are critical to their maximal improvement and happiness in this life. The value of children is obvious in a primitive society, where survival depends on having children to share the work as you age and care for you in your late life.

The reproach of women in that day will come because women will snap into a forgotten awareness of these things. They will seek to provide value, and will realize that the most significant way of doing so is through having children. Unfortunately, most men will be dead from war and other causes.
