Woe, Woe, Woe to the United States

[Note: the Isaiah verses here are from the Gileadi translation, which I highly recommend. I do not earn any commission off this endorsement.]

We read in Isaiah 5 that the Beloved "had a vineyard on the fertile brow of a hill." The fertility of the land and it's status as the top of a hill are important. The Lord "cultivated it," cleared it of stones, "and planted it with choice vines." This was a promised land, prepared by the Lord himself to be a place of delight; a productive (perhaps the most productive) land in the world, the foremost of nations.

This is the United States.

In order to protect his investment of favor, the Lord "build a watchtower in its midst." This tower would serve as a shield and a protection against any dangers that might threaten the vineyard. Additionally, he "hewed for it a winepress as well." This winepress was expected to be used to process the grapes that would be produced, so the Lord thought, in abundance (it was a vineyard, after all). Though everything was present for the vineyard to produce high quality grapes in abundance, "it produced wild grapes." The grapes in this story could represent fruit born of the gospel.The grape and grape juice are incredibly symbolic. I will leave that discussion for another time/place. For our purposes, let's simply interpret grapes as the fruit of the people as well as the covenant God extends to the righteous.

The Lord tells how he could do no more for his vineyard than what he did. They truly had the most ideal situation of any of the Lord's people.

We have arrived at a time when the majority of the people choose what is wrong, both in their personal lives and in their politics.
"Now it is not common that the voice of the people desireth anything contrary to that which is right; but it is common for the lesser part of the people to desire that which is not right; therefore this shall ye observe and make it your law—to do your business by the voice of the people. And if the time comes that the voice of the people doth choose iniquity, then is the time that the judgments of God will come upon you; yea, then is the time he will visit you with great destruction even as he has hitherto visited this land. (Mosiah 29:26-27)
Like every covenant people brought to this land, the people of the United States have received a more favorable environment to follow the Lord than any other people on any other land. We were blessed with a prototype of Zion law (inalienable rights, right to property, and laws of self-governance). We have squandered our prototypical Zion environment as well as every blessing of abundance and peace that God has granted us. We are at least as morally bankrupt as any other people on the globe today despite having received far more blessings than any on the globe today. Following the pattern of every other people throughout history in our situation, we will be destroyed.

God has promised that all nations that possess this land will serve him or be swept off.

For behold, this is a land which is choice above all other lands; wherefore he that doth possess it shall serve God or shall be swept off; for it is the everlasting decree of God. (Ether 2:10)
This decree has not expired. We, as a nation, are as far from serving God as we can get. We are ripe in iniquity, and we will be swept off the land. He will do it the same way he has always done it: through natural disasters, famine, invading armies, pestilence, economic failure and civil war.

It is a false tradition that the United States will survive events preceding the Second Coming

While speaking about the Second Coming of the Savior, the Prophet Joseph Smith explained:
“It is a false idea that the Saints will escape all the judgments, whilst the wicked suffer; for all flesh is subject to suffer, and ‘the righteous shall hardly escape;’ still many of the Saints will escape, for the just shall live by faith; yet many of the righteous shall fall a prey to disease, to pestilence, etc., by reason of the weakness of the flesh, and yet be saved in the Kingdom of God. So that it is an unhallowed principle to say that such and such have transgressed because they have been preyed upon by disease or death, for all flesh is subject to death; and the Savior has said, ‘Judge not, lest ye be judged’” ( History of the Church, 4:11).
The United States will not be spared destruction [1]. In fact, it will be the epicenter of many of the latter day destructions promised by the Lord's servants past and present.

The Lord made it clear that every nation will be fully destroyed prior to the Second Coming:

"For I am with thee, saith the Lord, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished." (Jeremiah 30:11)

"And thus, with the sword and by bloodshed the inhabitants of the earth shall mourn; and with famine, and plague, and earthquake, and the thunder of heaven, and the fierce and vivid lightning also, shall the inhabitants of the earth be made to feel the wrath, and indignation, and chastening hand of an Almighty God, until the consumption decreed hath made a full end of all nations;" (D&C 87:6)

 "But they shall be gathered again; but they shall remain until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.
And in that day shall be heard of wars and rumors of wars, and the whole earth shall be in commotion, and men’s hearts shall fail them, and they shall say that Christ delayeth his coming until the end of the earth." (D&C 45)

``For a desolating scourge shall go forth among the inhabitants of the earth, and shall continue to be poured out from time to time, if they repent not, until the earth is empty, and the inhabitants thereof are consumed away and utterly destroyed by the brightness of my coming. Behold, I tell you these things even as I also told the people of the destruction of Jerusalem; and my word shall be verified at this time as it hath hitherto been verified.'' (D&C 5:19-20)

"And it shall be a great day at the time of my coming, for all nations shall tremble.'' (D\&C 34:8)

"Mine indignation is soon to be poured out without measure upon all nations; and this will I do when the cup of their iniquity is full." (D&C 101:11)

"And then understood they the parable which he spake unto them, that the Gentiles should be destroyed also, when the Lord should descend out of heaven to reign in his vineyard, which is the earth and the inhabitants thereof." (Inspired Version Matt 21:56)

Some would cry "all is well, all is well," [2] in spite of the resounding warnings in scripture, from contemporary messengers of the Lord, from current natural disasters, and even from scientists (each of these sources is quoted by topic below).

This scenario is not new. Whenever God sends true messengers to warn of impending destruction, there also rise up opposing false prophets to declare that all is well and there is no need for alarm. Jeremiah lamented about this reaction to his warnings, and had the following exchange with the Lord:
13 ¶Then said I, Ah, Lord God! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place. 14 Then the Lord said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart. 15 Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed. 16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them. (Jeremiah 14)
Isaiah prophesied of this situation:
They are a rebellious people, sons who break faith, children unwilling to obey the law of Jehovah, 10 who say to the seers, See not! and to those with visions, Predict not what is right for us: flatter us; foresee a farce! 11 Get out of the way; move aside, off the path! Cease confronting us with the Holy One of Israel! 12 Therefore, thus says the Holy One of Israel: Because you have rejected this word, and rely on manipulation and double dealing, and on them are dependent, 13 this iniquity will be to you as a perilous breach exposed in a high wall which suddenly and unexpectedly collapses. 14 It shall shatter with a crash like an earthenware vessel ruthlessly smashed, among whose fragments shall not be found a shard with which to scoop lit embers from a fireplace, or dip water from a tank. 15 For thus says my Lord Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel: By a calm response triumph; with quiet confidence gain the victory. But you would have none of it. 16 For you thought, Not so; we will flee on horses! Therefore shall you flee indeed. We will ride on swift mounts! Therefore shall your pursuers be swifter. 17 You will flee by the thousand at the threat of one, by thousands at the threat of five, till you are left as a flagstaff on a mountaintop, an ensign on a hill. (Isaiah 30:9-17)

The destruction of those who ignore the warnings will serve as a symbol to the world that the Lord is fulfilling his word.

The destruction of the United States via natural disasters, civil war, military invasion, famine, pestilence, and economic failure is necessary to create the environment where Zion can be built.  Circumstances will shortly arise to render the arid wastelands in America into fertile areas, while making the cities desolate and uninhabited.

  1. Thy holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation. (Isaiah 64:10)
  2. Yet the defenced city shall be desolate, and the habitation forsaken, and left like a wilderness: there shall the calf feed, and there shall he lie down, and consume the branches thereof. (Isaiah 27:10)
  3. The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. (Isaiah 35:1)
  4. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. (Isaiah 35:6)
  5. I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water. (Isaiah 41:18)
  6. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. (Isaiah 43:19)
  7. I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, the shittah tree, and the myrtle, and the oil tree; I will set in the desert the fir tree, and the pine, and the box tree together: (Isaiah 41:19)
  8. The beast of the field shall honour me, the dragons and the owls: because I give waters in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, my chosen. (Isaiah 43:20)
  9. For the Lord shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody. (Isaiah 51:3)
It is interesting to note that the cities of the United States are disproportionately located in areas subject to all the types of destruction that the Lord has promised to send (see scriptures), while many of the desolate areas (including those possessed by Native Americans) are in areas insulated from most of these types of destruction.

Consider the following maps.

This one shows the population density in the US:

This one shows the hazard from earthquakes:

This one shows the location of Indian reservations:

An analysis of risk for foreign invasion, tidal waves, civil unrest, or spread of infectious diseases will yield a similar conclusion.

Joseph Smith had a revelation on the conditions that would occur in the United States prior to the Second Coming. He said:

I saw men hunting the lives of their own sons, and brother murdering brother, women killing their own daughters, and daughters seeking the lives of their mothers. I saw armies arrayed against armies. I saw blood, desolation, fires. The Son of man has said that the mother shall be against the daughters, and the daughter against the mother. These things are at our doors. They will follow the Saints of God from city to city. Satan will rage, and the spirit of the devil is now enraged. I know not how soon these things will take place; but with a view of them, shall I cry peace? No; I will lift up my voice and testify of them. How long you will have good crops, and the famine be kept off, I do not know; when the fig tree leaves, know then that the summer is nigh at hand. (TPJS, 161)

On August 16, 1878, David Whitmer was interviewed in the Deseret News. He said that there would be "A civil war more bloody and cruel than the rebellion. It will be the smashing up of this nation, about which time the second great work has to be done, a work like Joseph did, and the translation of
the sealed plates and peace all over."

"... My brother, Noah Packard, says that he heard the Prophet Joseph say that the next great (U.S. civil) war after the war of the rebellion (the Civil War of the 1860's between the North and the South) would commence in a little town now called Chicago but at that time it would have grown to be a very large city. And another brother told me that the Prophet said that the cause of the next great trouble of the United States would be the depreciation of the currency of the United States. I believe I have given you all the facts in as short and concise manner as possible." (A. Milton Musser papers, LDS Church Archives. It is a letter from Nephi Packard to A. Milton Musser on July 24, 1896.)

Mena Lee Grebin has discussed visions the Lord has given her of financial collapse. She said that the black horse of the apocalypse is associated with hyperinflation.

"In the spring of 2014 the Lord woke her up at about 2:45 am and woke her up saying to her, “Death to the finances!” He said it so strongly it startled her. She asked, “Death to the finances?” Then the Lord said, “A recession within a recession is coming.” Then he showed her a vision of the rider on a black horse. He was riding across a calendar and the months were September, October, November, and December. He started in September and rode across those four months."

The Lord told her the riding occurred at the end of 2015. Here we are witnessing a steady collapse of the global financial system starting 1 Jan 2016, with the main cause connected to oil (which is black).

D&C 45 speaks of a time when the Gentiles will be scourged:

"And the love of men shall wax cold, and iniquity shall abound. And when the times of the Gentiles is come in, a light shall break forth among them that sit in darkness, and it shall be the fulness of my gospel; But they receive it not; for they perceive not the light, and they turn their hearts from me because of the precepts of men. And in that generation shall the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. And there shall be men standing in that generation, that shall not pass until they shall see an overflowing scourge; for a desolating sickness shall cover the land. But my disciples shall stand in holy places, and shall not be moved; but among the wicked, men shall lift up their voices and curse God and die. And there shall be earthquakes also in divers places, and many desolations; yet men will harden their hearts against me, and they will take up the sword, one against another, and they will kill one another. (D&C 45:25-33)

Orson Pratt believed that the coming civil war would be much worse than the one in the 1800s:
But what about the American nation. That war that destroyed the lives of some fifteen or sixteen hundred thousand people was nothing, compared to that which will eventually devastate that country. The time is not very far distant in the future, when the Lord God will lay his hand heavily upon that nations. "How do you know this? inquires one." I know from the revelations which God has given upon this subject. I read these revelations, when they were first given. I waited over twenty-eight years and saw their fulfillment to the very letter. [Referring to D&C 87] Should I not, then, expect that the balance of them should be fulfilled? That same God who gave the revelations to his servant Joseph Smith in regard to these matters, will fulfil every jot and every tittle that has been spoken, concerning that nation. What then will be the condition of that people, when this great and terrible war shall come? It will be very different from the war between the North and the South. Do you wish me to describe it? I will do so. It will be a war of neighborhood against neighborhood, city against city, town against town, county against county, state against state, and they will go forth destroying and being destroyed and manufacturing will, in a great measure, cease, for a time, among the American nation. Why? Because in these terrible wars, they will not be privileged to manufacture, there will be too much bloodshed--too much mobocracy--too much going forth in bands and destroying and pillaging the land to suffer people to pursue any local vocation with any degree of safety. What will become of millions of the farmers upon that land? They will leave their farms and they will remain uncultivated, and they will flee before the ravaging armies from place to place; and thus will they go forth burning and pillaging the whole country; and that great and powerful nation, now consisting of some forty millions of people, will be wasted away, unless they repent. (JD, ORSON PRATT 20:151)
Some, myself included, believe that D&C 87 is only partially fulfilled, and that the fulfillment of the balance is something we will witness shortly.

"1 Verily, thus saith the Lord concerning the wars that will shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina, which will eventually terminate in the death and misery of many souls;
 2 And the time will come that war will be poured out upon all nations, beginning at this place.
 3 For behold, the Southern States shall be divided against the Northern States, and the Southern States will call on other nations, even the nation of Great Britain, as it is called, and they shall also call upon other nations, in order to defend themselves against other nations; and then war shall be poured out upon all nations.
 4 And it shall come to pass, after many days, slaves shall rise up against their masters, who shall be marshaled and disciplined for war.
 5 And it shall come to pass also that the remnants who are left of the land will marshal themselves, and shall become exceedingly angry, and shall vex the Gentiles with a sore vexation.
 6 And thus, with the sword and by bloodshed the inhabitants of the earth shall mourn; and with famine, and plague, and earthquake, and the thunder of heaven, and the fierce and vivid lightning also, shall the inhabitants of the earth be made to feel the wrath, and indignation, and chastening hand of an Almighty God, until the consumption decreed hath made a full end of all nations;
 7 That the cry of the saints, and of the blood of the saints, shall cease to come up into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth, from the earth, to be avenged of their enemies.
 8 Wherefore, stand ye in holy places, and be not moved, until the day of the Lord come; for behold, it cometh quickly, saith the Lord. Amen.'' (D&C 87)
I believe that we are about to see a fulfillment of the scriptures warning that a remnant of Jacob will tear up the Gentiles with none to deliver, in the form of Muslim immigrants wreaking havoc in Europe and the United States.

Orson Pratt described that the dangerous conditions and demands of the tribulation will cause an end to farming, causing a famine.

The time will come when there will be no safety in carrying on the peaceable pursuits of farming or agriculture. But these will be neglected, and the people will think themselves well off if they can flee from city to city, from town to town and escape with their lives. Thus will the Lord visit the people, if they will not repent. Thus will He pour out His wrath and indignation upon them and make manifest to the people that that which he has spoken must be fulfilled. (JD, ORSON PRATT 12:344)
The lack of diversity in our commercial crops (corn, soybeans) will prove disastrous if a disease emerges that is particularly effective at killing these crops. Some have reported visions where they were shown such diseases causing unimaginable food shortages in the US and abroad (the US supplies commodities world wide).

There are many testimonies from scripture that the latter days will feature massive earthquakes. Here are some. Testimonies of earthquakes to come are not limited to scripture.

Scientists have very recently made a series of discoveries of which all Americans should be aware. First, scientists only recently discovered that the massive fault line off the northwest coast (the Cascadia subduction zone) has ruptured on regular intervals, wreaking havoc on the previously uninhabited coastline for hundreds of miles via 9+ magnitude earthquakes coupled with massive tsunamis.

Second, scientists have recently discovered that massive earthquakes, such as those generated by the aforementioned Cascadia, can and do trigger earthquakes on adjacent faults.

From wikipedia:
"Studies of past earthquake traces on both the northern San Andreas Fault and the southern Cascadia subduction zone indicate a correlation in time which may be evidence that quakes on the Cascadia subduction zone may have triggered most of the major quakes on the northern San Andreas during at least the past 3,000 years or so. The evidence also shows the rupture direction going from north to south in each of these time-correlated events. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake seems to have been a major exception to this correlation, however, as it was not preceded by a major Cascadia quake."

Fault lines move, and when movement is inhibited (as it normally is by friction), the force builds like a spring until it is knocked lose, generating an earthquake. America is much more seismically active than most realize. For some strange reason, it has been much less active in the last 100-200 years than other parts of the world. This only means that the spring is wound much tighter than usual. Scientists agree that various adjacent faults, such as the Cascadia, several in California, and the Wasatch front in Utah, are all long overdue for a massive quake.

I believe that when the Cascadia goes, it will happen in conjunction with California, Utah, and Nevada faults. Looking at a population map, this could mean the immediate death of up to 50 million people, with subsequent fatalities among survivors for months-long lack to food, water, or medicine due to limited government capacity to intervene in such a large-scale disaster.

Recently, a gem scientist discovered that there are massive deposits of water deep underground that equal the total volume of all above-ground oceans on earth. This is not an apologist, a Mormon, or a creationist.

Interestingly, during the cold war, the Russians decided to drill a very deep hole in hopes to access the earth's magma sub-crust. They had to abandon the project because vast quantities of water were encountered deeper than scientists thought possible.

The scriptures pertaining to Noah suggest that, in Noah's time, there was sufficient water in these "fountains of the deep" to submerge the world's highest peak by 15 cubits.

There is a scientist who has several videos on youtube explaining his "hydroplate theory." The theory describes how the continents could have divided from one supercontinent into their present arrangement, and how Noah's flood could have been this event.

The ancients knew that there was water under the earth. "And now, ye remember that I said unto you: Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of things which are in heaven above, or which are in the earth beneath, or which are in the water under the earth." (Mosiah 13:12)

God divided the water on the top of the crust from the water beneath the crust. " And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so." (Genesis 1:7)

We are told that these subterranean waters will be troubled in the last days:

"And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity like the sea and the waves roaring. The earth also shall be troubled, and the waters of the great deep." (JST Luke 21:25)

Recently, a book called "Visions of Glory" relates one man's purported vision of a major earthquake occurring along the Wasatch front. He said that significant amounts of water caused the Salt Lake and Utah valleys to fill at least partially with water. This was not just water from the dams which will surely break in an earthquake, but pressurized water coming out of the ground.

I know of a couple who have had waking visions that reflect the same sort of flood described in "Visions of Glory." This couple told me that the Lord told them the water level would be 250 feet above the current level of Utah lake. This perplexed them, since it seems vastly over the amount reported in "Visions of Glory," but they noted that Pontius wrote that the images in the book were purposely minimized due to the content and out of a fear of scaring people. Recently, I was looking into Lake Bonneville, the ancient lake that is the cause of the visible waterline in the mountains of the valleys of Utah. According to the sites I visited, this lake was, at its highest point, 250 feet above the current level of Utah lake. I found that interesting.

My associates and "Spencer" are not the only ones who have seen this in vision. Denise Mendenhall has as well, and has described it publicly. I also know another person who has seen it.

Supposing this couple I know and the authors of "Visions of Glory" are correct, water would cover most of the population-dense areas of Utah. You can google a map of Lake Bonneville and see what areas would be under significant amounts of water if the level of Utah lake rose by 250'.

This is what Utah valley would look like if the water level raised by 250'. If this happened due to an earthquake, the water levels would rise to this height faster than most would be able to escape.

This is what SLC would look like if the water level raised by 250'.

This is what the temple would look like if the water level raised by 250'. Notice Moroni is just above the water level.

It is also interesting to note that it seems that this water would flow north to Pocatello and form a very wide river due west to the sea. If this event occurred, it would be virtually impossible for anyone to travel northeast by foot, and the travel around the water would take a very long time indeed.

Living water is flowing water. What sort of things would be washed away by this vast amount of living water should these predictions come true?

Some folks have worked out what would happen if a major tidal wave hit the east coast of the US.

Where would all this water come from? Well, there are lots of possibilities. First, apparently the Canary Islands are quite unstable, and if just one fell into the ocean, it could generate 300' Tsunamis along all Atlantic coasts. Any sort of random earthquake in the ocean would also create tsunamis.

Besides tidal waves, we read both in science and scripture of vast quantities of water unequally distributed beneath the earth. What would happen if a massive city was suddenly sunken into underground aquifers?

With all of this, should the things prophesied of in the scriptures and by prophets come to pass, we would see a very large portion of the world's population be washed away very quickly. Some 100 million people live along the east coast of the US. Add the west coast, and you have around 150 million, which is a little less than half the population of the United States. And what about around the world?

Almost two years ago, I encountered a Christian man. We had several hours to talk. He felt prompted to divulge to me that he spent about a year going on fasts in the wilderness. He said he would pray for hours a day "on his face" to come to the face of Christ. In the process, he said, God told him many things. He began to have waking visions.

He said he used to be a racist. In fact, going to fast was motivated by his desire for God to help change his heart. He said one day God told him that the Native Americans were special to him, and that he should be nice to them. He (God) showed him the things the Spanish and English did to the Natives, which made him feel very sorry.

He said God showed him once that the spirits of babies actually come from heaven, they aren't formed in the womb.

He described in his own vocabulary what those of an LDS background would call translated beings. He said he knows of three of these beings: 2 are in the US, and 1 is in France. He said they very well could be in disguise at high levels of office in the US.

Finally, at the end of our conversation, he leaned close and essentially said, "Rob, this is going to sound very crazy, I've written letters to all sorts of Pastors and they don't believe me. God showed me once that very soon there will be a major earthquake or tornado in a major city in the US, and the Chinese are going to come in large numbers saying they will be helping out. But they will never leave. They will also bring a superflu weapon that they themselves have been inoculated against for years. Eventually it will get back to their own people and kill a lot of them." I asked him if that was something he had read and he got a very serious look on his face: "No. God showed me that in a vision. I saw it plain as day." Interestingly, these comments fit one potential scenario described in Isaiah.

"Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets." (Amos 3:7) At what point do we, like Lehi, respond to the many prophets God is giving this message to and repent and prepare for what is coming?

Isaiah wrote extensively about foreign invasion in the latter days. It is my personal belief that he saw the invasion of the United States.

“Your land is ruined, your cities burned with fire; you native soil is devoured by aliens in your presence, laid waste at its takeover by foreigners. The Daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, a hut in a melon field, a city under seige. Had not Jehovah of Hosts left us a few survivors, we should have been as Sodom, or become like Gomorrah.” (1:7-9)

“If you are willing and obey, you shall eat the good of the land. But if you are unwilling and disobey, you shall be eaten by the sword.” (1:19-20)

“Your men shall be felled by the sword, your might overthrown in war. Her gateways shall lie bereaved and forlorn; she shall sit on the ground destitute.“ (3:25-26)

26 He raises an ensign to distant nations
and summons them from beyond the horizon.
Forthwith they come, swiftly and speedily.
27 Not one of them grows weary,
nor does any stumble;
they do not drowse or fall asleep.
Their waist-belts come not loose
nor their sandal thongs undone.
28 Their arrows are sharp;
all their bows are strung.
The tread of their warhorses resembles flint;
their chariot wheels revolve like a whirlwind.
29 They have the roar of a lion;
they are aroused like young lions:
growling, they seize the prey, and escape,
and none comes to the rescue.
(Isaiah 5:26-29)

 Because these people have rejected
the Waters of Shiloah, which flow gently,
and rejoice in Rezin and the son of Remaliah,
7 therefore will my Lord
cause to come up over them
the great and mighty waters of the River—
the king of Assyria in all his glory.
He will rise up over all his channels
and overflow all his banks.
8 He will sweep into Judea like a flood
and, passing through, reach the very neck;
his outspread wings will span
the breadth of your land, O Immanuel.
 Though nations form pacts,
they shall be routed.
Give heed, all you distant lands!
You may take courage in one another,
but shall be in fear;
you may arm yourselves,
but shall be terrorized.
10 Though you hold consultations,
they shall come to nought;
though you make proposals,
they shall not prove firm: God is with us!
(Isaiah 8:6-10)
[Note the sarcasm of calling the wicked Immanuel/God is with us]

4 Hark! A tumult on the mountains,
as of a vast multitude.
Hark! An uproar among kingdoms,
as of nations assembling:
Jehovah of Hosts is marshaling an army for war.
5 They come from a distant land beyond the horizon—
Jehovah and the instruments of his wrath—
to cause destruction throughout the earth.
(Isaiah 13:4-5)

15 Whoever is found shall be thrust through;
all who are caught shall fall by the sword.
16 Their infants shall be dashed in pieces before their eyes,
their homes plundered, their wives ravished.
17 See, I stir up against them the Medes,
who do nor value silver, nor covet gold.
18 Their bows shall tear apart the young.
They will show no mercy to the newborn;
their eye will not look with compassion on children.
19 And Babylon, the most splendid of kingdoms,
the glory and pride of Chaldeans, shall be thrown down
as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
20 Never shall it be reinhabited;
it shall not be resettled through all generations.
Nomads will not pitch their tents there,
nor will shepherds rest their flocks in it.
21 But wild animals will infest it,
and its buildings overflow with weasels;
birds of prey will find lodging there
and demonic creatures prance about in it.
22 Jackals will cry out from its palaces,
howling creatures from its amusement halls.
Her time draws near;
Babylon’s days shall not be prolonged.
(Isaiah 13:15-22)

Lo! Jehovah will lay waste the earth and empty it;
he will disfigure its surface
and scatter its inhabitants.
2 And it shall be with priest as with people,
with master as with servant,
with mistress as with maid,
with seller as with buyer,
with borrower as with lender,
with debtor as with creditor—
3 when the earth is sacked,
it shall be utterly ravaged.
Jehovah has given word concerning it.
(Isaiah 24:1-3)

21 In that day will Jehovah deal on high
with the hosts on high
and on earth with the rulers of the earth.
22 They shall be herded together
like prisoners to a dungeon
and shut in confinement many days, as punishment.
(Isaiah 24:21-22)

3 The peoples fled from your thunderous voice;
at your uprising the nations scattered.
4 Their spoil was harvested
in the manner of caterpillars;
like insatiable locusts they rushed upon it.
(Isaiah 33:3-4)

Who has raised up Righteousness from the east,
calling him to the place of his foot?
Who has delivered nations to him,
toppled their rulers,
rendering them as dust to his sword,
as driven stubble to his bow?
(Isaiah 41:2)

 It is the will of Jehovah that,
because of his righteousness,
they magnify the law and become illustrious.
22 Instead, they are a people plundered and sacked,
all of them trapped in holes,
hidden away in dungeons.
They have become a prey, yet no one rescues them,
a spoil, yet none demands restitution.
23 Who among you hearing this
will take heed of it hereafter,
and be mindful and obey?
24 Who is it that hands Jacob over to plunder
and Israel to despoilers, if not Jehovah,
against whom we have sinned?
For they have no desire to walk in his ways
or obey his law.
25 So in the heat of his anger
he pours out on them the violence of war,
till it envelopes them in flames—
yet they remain unaware—
till it sets them on fire;
yet they take it not to heart.
(Isaiah 42:21-25)

I summon a bird of prey from the east,
from a distant land
the man who performs my counsel.
(Isaiah 46:11)

The Lord is not happy. He says he will have the vineyard's hedge removed. The vineyard's hedge is a protective wall. He will remove the thing that protects the vineyard. In case you haven't guessed, the United States is the vineyard. What could the hedge be? Possibly the dollar's value and reserve currency status. Possibly the military (which would instantly disband and/or revolt if their pay and promised benefits were withdrawn). "...and let it be burned." When a farmer wants to destroy his vineyard, burning it is a fit means.

What would the destruction of the USA entail? Isaiah tell us it here and in other places. "I will have its wall broken through and let it be trampled." This is foreign invasion on a large scale (trampling cannot occur with just a few people). "I will make it a desolation: it shall neither be pruned nor hoed." What would be required for US farmland to lay dormant? A lack of oil would accomplish that, as the vast majority of US farms are exceedingly large (average 421 acres) and impossible to cultivate without diesel fuel. If the US were under invasion, any farm under cultivation would be a target for attack and/or pillage, and not just from the invading forces, as starving civilians would go house to house marauding for food. "Moreover, I will forbid the rainclouds to rain on it." In a drought, even those looking for wild foods or growing a small, hidden garden will be unsuccessful.

Why would God do such a thing? "He expected justice, but there was injustice; he expected righteousness, but there was an outcry." The USA has been blessed with greater wealth, more discretionary time, and greater technology than any other group of people who have ever lived on this earth. Yet, for all the excessive blessings, have we been excessively loyal to God? No. Instead, we have not only ignored the plight of the suffering around the globe, but we have ground their faces by exploiting them for cheap labor while simultaneously exacerbating their poverty by exporting food aid that ends up in the hands of dictators and destroys local economies. We have pillaged countries and murdered the innocent to uphold the petro-dollar. All the while we have embraced abortion, adultery, fornication, graft, theft, lying, murder, gluttony, and every other sin you can name.

God is not pleased with the shift from an agrarian home farm lifestyle to the modern superfarm and city plan: "Woe to those who join house to house and link field to field till no place is left, and you are restricted to dwell in the centers [cities] of the land!" He says the consequence of this will be that "many buildings shall lie desolate, large and fine houses unoccupied." This has already occurred with the 2008 housing crisis, and it will get a lot worse before it is all over. We are in the midst of an even larger housing bubble than the one in 2008, and with banks doing everything they can to disguise the glut of foreclosed properties currently available, the crash this time will be far worse than the one in 2008. That isn't even counting how many vacant houses there will be when the real stuff hits the fan.

The Lord says, "A ten-acre vineyard shall yield but one bath, a homer of seed but an ephah." This verse, like many in Isaiah, must be out of chronological order because, as discussed before, after foreign invasion no farms will be in production. This pre-invasion description states that farm productivity will decline. Since the 1940s, US crop output per acre has increased. The rate of increase has not only markedly slowed, but the amount of oil-based fertilizers required to maintain yields has dramatically increased. If someone pulled the plug on oil-dependent fertilizers (say, but drastically increasing the cost of oil) what would happen to food production in the US? It would be a specter of its former self (40-50% of current output, according to various sources).

The invasion will bring with it, at least for some, forced deportation to foreign lands. There will be deadly water and food shortages. "Therefore are my people exiled without knowing why; their best men die of famine, their masses perish with thirst."

The common and the elite alike will be plagued. In fact, it is easy to imagine that the majority of people in the US---who depend on food stamps, medicaid, federal/military retirement, or social security to survive---would quickly seek revenge upon the wealthy, blaming their excess for the plight in which they find themselves. "Sheol becomes ravenous, opening its mouth insatiably; into it descend their elite with the masses, their boisterous ones and revelers."

The Lord warns us about our vices. "Woe to those drawn to sin by vain attachments, hitched to transgression like a trailer, who think, Let him quickly speed up his work so we may see it! Let the plan of the Holy One of Israel soon come to pass, and we will know!" So many of us can't go a day without being sucked into our vices. What's more, many of us who are in the midst of iniquity are so ignorant of our true state before God that we seek for his Second Coming, not realizing how awful that day will be for any who have not been pronounced clean through faithfulness to Jesus Christ. This confusion is elaborated: "Woe to those who suppose what is evil to be good and what is good, evil! They put darkness for light and light for darkness; they make bitterness sweet and the sweet bitter." These are they who trust in the arm of the flesh to tell them right and wrong, instead of the Holy Ghost. They set up fleshy idols to prescribe their paths, and trample upon the Holy One of Israel. But they will not allow anyone to wake them from their slumber. "Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own view!" What will happen to them? "As a blazing fire consumes stubble, and as dry weeds wane before the flame, so shall their roots decay away and their blossoms fly up like dust. For they have despised the law of Jehovah of Hosts and reviled the words of the Holy One of Israel." Instead, they preferred the words of blind guides and the wisdom of the world.

"Therefore the anger of Jehovah is kindled against his people." His reaction is to send foreign invaders to spoil and to destroy them. Not only this, but great natural disasters. "...the mountains quake, and their corpses lie like litter about the streets." A high quantity of people live on the fault lines in Utah, California, and other areas. A massive earthquake around Washington, D.C. would kill tens of millions of people, as many large cities sit on the same plate. All of this does not even include the possibility of nuclear weapons or the more likely scenario of biological agents from the invading army.

The army is summoned from "beyond the horizon. Forthwith they come, swiftly and speedily. Not one of them grows weary, nor does any stumble; they do not drowse or fall asleep. Their waist-belts come not loose nor their sandal thongs undone. Their arrows are sharp; all their bows are strung. The tread of their warhorses resembles flint; their chariot wheels revolve like a whirlwind. They have the roar of a lion; they are aroused like young lions: growling, they seize the prey, and escape, and none comes to the rescue." This description by Isaiah, though limited by the words he had at his command, easily fits the description of a modern superpower army. You can see parachutist troops who fly direct to their destination with no time to rest, or long range bombers who are capable of flying from "beyond the horizon" around the globe to drop munitions on the US. Some of these localized incursions could be under orders to kill the men and bring the women and children back to their source, conducting "snatch and grab" missions. There will be no earthly army to come to the rescue.

Like all things, you should ask God for what you should do. He has already given general instructions in Luke 21. Remember, I already cited the JST from that chapter above. Here is the verse in context (KJV):

 24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.
 25 ¶And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
 26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
 27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
 28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
 29 And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees;
 30 When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand.
 31 So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.
 32 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.
 33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
 34 ¶And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.
 35 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.
 36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

When we see the flood and the earthquake that generates it, when we see the international turmoil promised, when we see the signs in the sun, moon, and stars, then we should recognize these as signs that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand. Verse 34 tells us what to do: Do not overindulge in the spoils of this world and the cares of this life. Instead, be concerned with the affairs of the poor and oppressed, and with your own relationship with God. As Isaiah said of our day:

"7 Your land is ruined,
your cities burned with fire;
your native soil is devoured by aliens in your presence,
laid waste at its takeover by foreigners.
8 The Daughter of Zion is left
like a shelter in a vineyard,
a hut in a melon field,
a city under siege.
9 Had not Jehovah of Hosts left us a few survivors,
we should have been as Sodom,
or become like Gomorrah.
10 Hear the word of Jehovah,
O leaders of Sodom;give heed to the law of our God,
you people of Gomorrah!
11 For what purpose are your abundant
sacrifices to me? says Jehovah.
I have had my fill of offerings of rams
and fat of fatted beasts;
the blood of bulls and sheep and he-goats
I do not want.
12 When you come to see me,
who requires you to trample my courts so?
13 Bring no more worthless offerings;
they are as a loathsome incense to me.
As for convening meetings at the New Month
and on the Sabbath,
wickedness with the solemn gathering
I cannot approve.
14 Your monthly and regular meetings
my soul detests.
They have become a burden on me;
I am weary of putting up with them.
15 When you spread forth your hands,
I will conceal my eyes from you;
though you pray at length, I will not hear—
your hands are filled with blood.
16 Wash yourselves clean:
remove your wicked deeds
from before my eyes;
cease to do evil.
17 Learn to do good: demand justice,
stand up for the oppressed;
plead the cause of the fatherless,

appeal on behalf of the widow.
(Isaiah 1, Gileadi Translation)

I hope this information helps some few to reorganize their priorities and get themselves in order for what is coming.

Remember, as Isaiah said, God will leave some few survivors. Jesus leaves us this invitation:

"Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man." (Luke 21:36, KVJ)

[1] Some believe that the United States is impervious to the destruction God promised:
Men may fail in this country, earthquakes may come, seas may heave beyond their bounds, there may be great drought, disaster, and hardship, but this nation, founded on principles laid down by men whom God raised up, will never fail. This is the cradle of humanity, where life on this earth began in the Garden of Eden. This is the place of the new Jerusalem. This is the place that the Lord said is favored above all other nations in all the world. This is the place where the Savior will come to His temple. This is the favored land in all the world. Yes, I repeat, men may fail, but this nation won’t fail. I have faith in America; you and I must have faith in America, if we understand the teachings of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are living in a day when we must pay heed to these challenges.
I plead with you not to preach pessimism. Preach that this is the greatest country in all the world. This is the favored land. This is the land of our forefathers. It is the nation that will stand despite whatever trials or crises it may yet have to pass through. (Harold B. Lee, Ye Are the Light of the World 350–51)
This same Harold B. Lee once said:
 All that we teach in this Church ought to be couched in the scriptures. … We ought to choose our texts from the scriptures, and wherever you have an illustration in the scriptures or a revelation in the Book of Mormon, use it, and do not draw from other sources where you can find it here in these books. We call these the standard Church works because they are standard. If you want to measure truth, measure it by the four standard Church works. … If it is not in the standard works, you may well assume that it is speculation. It is man’s own personal opinion, to put it another way; and if it contradicts what is in the scriptures, you may know by that same token that it is not true. (The Teachings of Harold B. Lee, 148–49)
There are plenty of scriptures that prove that the United States will be destroyed. Therefore, this was a false prophecy by the standards of the man who uttered it.

[2]  “Thus, clearly, the Lord has placed the responsibility for directing the work of gathering in the hands of the leaders of the Church to whom he will reveal his will where and when such gatherings would take place in the future. It would be well--before the frightening events concerning the fulfilment of all God's promises and predictions are upon us, that the Saints in every land prepare themselves and look forward to the instruction that shall come to them from the First Presidency of this Church as to where they shall be gathered and not be disturbed in their feelings until such instruction is given to them as it is revealed by the Lord to the proper authority.” (Harold B. Lee, Conference Report, April 1948, p.55)
